University of Otago, the oldest University of New Zealand was found in 1869 and opened in July 1871. In the beginning it was authorized to grant degrees in Arts, Medicine, Law and Music. Today the university has expanded the range of courses and included undergraduate courses in Surveying, Pharmacy, medical Laboratory Science, education, Teaching and Physiotherapy and several specialized postgraduate courses.
