Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology looks back to the Nelson Technical School, which started in 1905. From 1930 to 1971 the Technical School was under the umbrella of Nelson College. In 1971 it became Nelson Polytechnic, an autonomous institution with its own council. In 2000, Nelson Polytechnic changed its name to Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
The institute offers more than 100 programs in degree, diploma and certificates. There are two campuses one in Nelson and Blenheim.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities have 5 schools and the Faculty of Business have 4 schools and they are:
- School of Tourism and Hospitality
- School of Health
- School of Arts and Media
- School of Social Sciences
- Te Tari Maori
- School of Aviation
- School of Business and Computer Technology
- New Zealand School of Fisheries
- School of Technology and Primary Industries
Some of the subjects that are offered are:
- Art and aviation
- Computer technology
- Education
- English language
- Travel and outdoors etc
The campus provides on campus residences for the students and they are styled as apartments. The library is well-equipped with books, e-journals and other online resources for the students. The Student Association at the institute is a platform to discuss and debate about academic concerns and other problems.
The institute provides NMIT Scholarships, however they are subject to various concerns.
