Technical Institutes of New Zealand are educational organizations providing career-oriented training and education in various fields. Higher Education institutions specializing in Technology and Vocational Education institutions specializing in technical education are the two major types of technical institutes found in New Zealand.
They are also known as Polytechnics or IT Institutions.
- History : Technical Institutes and Polytechnics in New Zealand are established under the Education Act 1989. They are considered as tertiary institutions owned by the state. The term ‘institute of technology' is officially recognised by government policies as equal to the term ‘polytechnic' regarding these institutions. There are altogether 19 Technical Institutes in New Zealand.
- Formation and Mergers : The state owned tertiary education system of New Zealand has been consolidated since the 1990s. Many of the polytechnics and technical institutes of New Zealand have merged with some of the universities in the country or sometimes with each other. The Auckland University of Technology is the only institution in New Zealand to have been upgraded to the status of a university from a polytechnic.

Simultaneously, often there is much exchange and assimilation in the courses and qualifications offered by these different types of organizations. The Technical Institutes of New Zealand generally provide technical, vocational and professional education. The main focus of these institutions is on practical learning.
