Established in 1982 the Oscail is the Distance Education Centre in Ireland and has constantly promoted adult education in Ireland.
The different courses that are offered by the centre are as follows:
- Bachelor of Arts (Hons)/Diploma in Arts
- Bachelor of Science (Hons)/Diploma in Information Technology
- Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Hons)
- Msc in Information Systems for Managers
- Msc in Internet Systems
- Msc in Management of Operations
All the programs are accredited by DCU or the Dublin City University and the students are provided with materials in the course of their study. The scientific method of teaching helps the students much irrespective of location, age and country. The Diploma in Arts and Bachelor of Arts are accredited by the NUI Mynooth, University College Cork, University of Dublin Trinity College and also the University of Limerick.
As part of its mission to provide education to non-traditional students, Oscail conducts research on the pedagogy and technology of distance education. It has participated in EU funded programs and is a founding member of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities. Scholarships are also provided to conduct research in various topics.
