The National University of Maynooth, situated 25km west of Dublin, is located in Ireland's only university town, Maynooth, which combines the historical legacy of its medieval origins with a present day location on the fringes of Dublin. In 1795 Grattan's Parliament passed an Act which created an academy "for the better education of persons professing the popish or Roman Catholic religion".
In 1896 St Patrick's College Maynooth attained the status of a Pontifical University for its courses in Theology, Philosophy and Canon Law.
There are 3 main faculties in the National University of Maynooth at present which offer both graduate and post-graduate studies and they are:
- Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy
- Faculty of Social Sciences
- Faculty of Science & Engineering
The university has an online library available to the students to carry on their research work in their respective fields. The Russell library is now the research library which houses the early-printed books (pre-1851), manuscripts and archives.
The University operates the following scholarships scheme. Scholarships are awarded by the Scholarships Board and preference is given to applicants who do not hold any other scholarships or educational awards as a mark of recognition for their work:
- Undergraduate Scholarships
- Entrance Scholarships
- Entrance scholarships of €1,000 are awarded to each first year student who achieves 500 points or more in their Leaving Certificate or GCE A Levels examination.
- Michael Osborne Equine Business Scholarships (A number of scholarships are available for students who are admitted to the Equine Business degree program. These scholarships are jointly sponsored by the University and Horse Racing Ireland).
- There are also some sports scholarships given to the students .
NUI Maynooth currently houses nearly 900 students on campus. The Residence Office compiles lists of on-campus as well as off campus accommodation with rooms available in traditional “digs” accommodation, self-catering in family homes and in private rented apartments and houses.
