The National University of Ireland was founded 1908 and promotes higher education for Irish Roman Catholics.
There are four colleges under it:
- University College, Galway;
- University College, Cork; and
- University College, Dublin
- The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and St. Patrick's College in Mynooth, a Roman Catholic seminary, are affiliated with the university.
The National University of Ireland (NUI) is a federal university system of constituent universities which were previously known as constituent colleges, and recognized colleges and they were set up under the Irish Universities Act, 1908, and significantly amended by the Universities Act, 1997.
The constituent universities act as independent universities, except that the degrees and diplomas are those of the National University of Ireland with its seat in Dublin.
The constituent universities are as follows:
- University College Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork
- University College Dublin - National University of Ireland, Dublin
- National University of Ireland, Galway
- National University of Ireland, Mynooth

3. Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy
4. Shannon College of Hotel Management
5. Institute of Public Administration
Within the university there is a common faculty structure in operation in the constituent universities. These ten faculties are: Agriculture, Arts, Celtic Studies, Commerce, Engineering & Architecture, Food Science & Technology, Law; Medicine & Health Sciences, Philosophy & Sociology, Science, and Veterinary Medicine.
