The Faculty of Arts is the largest in National University of Ireland, Galway, with more than 6,200 students. These include a growing number of overseas students, who come to study various courses in the Faculty - mainly from North America and Europe.
The students in the Faculty of Arts study mainly those fields of activity having humankind at their centre, such as:
- Language and Literature
- History
- Philosophy
The Faculty also studies social, behavioral and mathematical sciences.
The aim of the Faculty's teaching is to develop in students the capacities for critical analysis. The students of the Faculty of Arts at the same time are equipped with more tangible skills, such as the command of foreign languages or information technology and they are also trained to greater proficiency in the communicative skills.
National University of Galway has a good collection of books, journals, articles and other study materials in their James Hardiman Library which the students can access and carry on their research work.
There are some scholarships given to the students by the university as a mark of their achievement. The students are also applicable for certain scholarships which are not given by the university. Some of them are:
- Chinese government scholarships
- Greek scholarships
- University of Edinburgh Research Fellowships
The Student Accommodation office provides a register of lodgings for all the students which include staying with a host family and Student Residences. There are nine Student Residences providing self-catering housing specifically for NUI Galway students.
