The town of Munster in Westphalia obtained its university in 1771 through the initiative of the prince-bishop's vicar general, Freiherr von Fürstenberg.
The WWU increasingly offers modular courses of study leading to bachelor and masters degrees. This not only makes international exchanges easier, but also ensures high-quality teaching which can compete with the world's best. The German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) also emphasises the quality of teaching at the WWU Münster.

The University and Federal State Library of Münster (ULB), the Central Library of the Westphalia Wilhem University (WWU) and federal state library for the region Westphalia together assist the students in gathering information for research.
Students from many nations are eligible for living cost support from Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), an organization of the German government if they want to apply for scholarships.
The possibilities of the accommodation for studying in Muenster are versatile. The students usually apply for accommodation in hostel or in private houses through ASTA or through student welfare organizations.
