Saarland University, the first to be established after the Second World War, was founded in November 1948 with the support of the French Government and under the sponsorship of the University of Nancy. It has15,500 students. With its numerous degree programmes and qualifications (Diploma, Magister, state examinations and bachelor and master qualifications), Saarland University provides a wide range of disciplines.

- The University actively promotes innovation and entrepreneurship
- The University has a Contact Centre for Technology Transfer and the Centre for Innovative Production, which it runs jointly with Saarland University of Applied Sciences.

- The University offers Workshops for special topics, which helps student get over study difficulties.
- The main attraction of the University is the refractory which arranges meal. There is a grill station, salad bar, a beverage station which the students can avail.
