Higher Education in Germany has always been for students who look forward to quality education, especially in the field of Science. However, Germany has also developed a tradition of specialized education in the performing arts. The Universities in Germany enjoy a reputation for providing education of international standard.
Universities : At present, Germany has approximately 312 state and state-recognised higher education institutions, 331 universities, 159 Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Science), and 95 non-state institutions, 56 of which are exclusive institutions of Performing Arts (arts & music).
Types : The German Universities are of three kinds - Technical Universities, Comprehensive Universities (Gesamthochschulen) and Specialized Institutions at University Level. Other Institutions of Higher Education are the Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Science), and the Kunst-und Musikhochschulen or Institutes which provide education in fine arts or performing arts.
Linguistic Ability : The language used as the ‘language of instruction’ in all classes and seminars in the German Universities is German. A student aspiring to study in Germany is required to pass a German language test in order to get admitted into a German university.
Accommodation : The students registered with a German university are not provided with assured accommodation. Most German universities have Halls of Residence, but generally, students ( both German and International ) have to make arrangements for their accommodation individually.
Services : In most of the German states, the Studentenschaft (student body) exists to assist students in protecting their interests. A student automatically becomes a member of this organization when he or she is registered with a German university.
Scholarships : Scholarships for study and research in Germany are offered by The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). All information regarding the scholarships available in various categories is available in the DAAD Publication - ‘Scholarships and Funding for Study and Research in Germany for British Academic Staff, Researchers and Students’.
