On the tenth of October in 1877 Ludwig IV, The Grand Duke of Hesse named the Polytechnic School ´Technische Hochschule zu Darmstadt` (Darmstadt Polytechnic) and thereby raised the status of this educational institution to that of a university so that the Abitur (A level, i.e. advanced school-leaving certificate) became the basis for admission. In 1899 the TH Darmstadt was granted the right to award doctorates.

Scholarships:
The students can apply for scholarships through DAAD. The most extensive scholarship program is offered by the German academic exchange service (DAAD). DAAD scholarships are given for advanced studies or graduate studies. Scholarships are assigned primarily in accordance with performance criteria.
Library:
The university has a good collection of study materials for the students related to each department in the university library.
Housing:
The situation on the Darmstadt housing market is already strained. It is very difficult to find a favorable dwelling or a payable room. The students can look for accommodation in student hostel.
