The university was founded in Berlin in 1810, and William Humboldt's philosophy behind the foundation designated it as “the mother of all modern universities”. The beginning of the University saw the birth of four classical faculties of Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology. Its first academic term began with 256 students and 52 teaching staff.
Today, 207 subject study courses or course combinations are offered at the Humboldt -Universität. 19 disciplines lead to the "Diplom" degree, and “Diplom" degrees are offered in Interpreting and Translation for twelve languages, including several Eastern European languages. The degree of "Magister" can be obtained in 59 different subjects. The range of study courses also include the courses leading to the "Staatsprüfung" degree, i.e. Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy and the university and church exams in Protestant Theology.

Courses offered:
The degrees involve Bachelors, Masters, Diploma, and PhD in various subjects. Some of the subjects are:

- Literature, Linguistics, Scandinavian Studies, Romance Literature

Research Projects:
Since its foundation, Humboldt-Universität has encouraged research in various disciplines like humanities, social and cultural sciences, mathematics and natural sciences, medicine and agricultural sciences. The profile of Humboldt research is reflected in sixteen DFG Collaborative Research Centers and in thirteen Research Training Groups in which Humboldt-Universität has the coordinating function. Humboldt-Universität also plays a significant role in the DFG Research Center Matheon. The University is aware of the growing needs of the interdisciplinary studies and Humboldt has to set up an ad hoc Interdisciplinary Centres across faculty boundaries, some of which include Collaborative Research Centres.
Library:
The University has a large number of books, periodicals, databases, web links, and journals to help the students in their academic careers. The Library has connection with a number of other libraries from which the students can find their necessary information. The center university library of the HU in Berlin center puts a lot of emphasis on scientific materials.
The Library has the following resources:

3.21 branch libraries (partially with associated partial libraries)
4. University archives (with Kustodie) There are approx. 6 million books, 10,000 current magazines and over 25,000CD ROMs in the Library. The Library was established in 1813.
Accommodation:
Accommodations are available to the students halls, apartments and studios. The accommodation is available by the Student's Council or CROUS. The apartments are well-furnished and fully equipped to suit the needs of the students. some of the residences are Grosser Kurfuerst, Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Haus, Hostel Heart of Gold etc.
Scholarships:
A small amount of scholarships are available to the students and the funding is generally given to the European students.
