The University of Kiel was formally inaugurated on 5 October 1665 instigated by the dramatic rise in demand for well-educated priests as a result of the Reformation, and secondly, the admission of growing numbers of well-educated commoners to the administration as civil servants responsible for important duties.
The University offers various programs in the following faculties:
- Faculty of Theology
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Medicine
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
- Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Science
- Faculty of Engineering
There is a wide range of trusts and foundations which offer scholarships to enable students and junior researchers (doctoral and lectureship candidates) to finance the students' studies or academic work as well as stays abroad.
The Housing Department of the Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein offers rooms and small apartments in the10 residence halls including student villages. There are also Youth Hostels available for the students.
The university Central library has loads of study material that includes e-books, magazines, e-magazines, e-theses, essays, books and databases among other things.
