The Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail enjoys a long humanistic tradition. The University which was founded in 1229, earned worldwide fame in the sixteenth century. In 1968 it moved from downtown Toulouse; in 1971 it moved into its present quarters in the new Mirail district.

One of France's most advanced distance-learning services enables nonresident students to earn degrees up to the Licence level in most fields (and to the maîtrise in some fields).
The university's three doctoral programs are in:

- Behavior, language, education, socialization, and cognition.
Each year some 100 doctoral candidates (a quarter of whom come from outside France) defend their theses at the university, capping a program of graduate study that begins with 22 different DEA (Diplômes d'Etudes Approfondies) programs.
Research activities at the Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail are organized around 43 teams. The fields emphasized by the university are archaeology and history, linguistics, labor studies, and regional research.
