The Université de Savoie established in 1979 is a comprehensive public university (except for medicine and paramedical specialties) that operates on three campuses—in Chambéry, Le Bourget, and Annecy—beautifully situated in a region of lakes and mountains.

- Faculty of Humanities, Literature and Languages: Modern Letters, English, German, Italian, Spanish, History, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.
- Faculty of Economics and Law: Law, Public Administration.
- Faculty of Business: Management, Marketing, Tourism, Hotel Management, Transport, and International Trade.
- Center for the interdisciplinary study of mountain regions: Geography, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Athletics and Physical Education.
- Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Electronics, Electrotechnics and Automation.
- Schools of Engineering (Annecy, Le Bourget): Environmental Engineering, Construction, Composite Materials, Industrial Computing and Automation, Software Engineering, Applied Physics and Instrumentation, Automated Production.
There are 23 research laboratories and 270 doctoral candidates. The principal research themes include:
- Particle physics
- Molecular and environmental chemistry
- Alpine ecology
- Mountain environments
- Information and knowledge processing
- Applied mechanics
There is an intimate campus with a multicultural feel, with 10 percent of the student body coming from more than 80 countries.
