Situated in Villeneuve d'Ascq in the Nord-Pas-de Calais region the Universite Lille 1 is more than 400 years old and this public university skillfully combine research and teaching for 20,000 students. The University is also known to be the leader of continuing education in France. Lille University was founded in 1562 by the Spanish and it became French in 1667.
Louis Pasteur was the first Dean of the Science Faculty in 1854. Lille University was, at that time, situated in the town centre. In 1971, following the law reforming the university system (Edgar Faure Law) the Science Faculty became the USTL and the different faculties in Lille moved to the new town of Villeneuve d'Ascq.
There are 9 teaching and research faculties in the University and they are:
- Science and Technology
- Economics and Management
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- School of Business Administration (IAE)
- University Institute of Technology with 3 engineering Schools
There are also 45 laboratories and 33 are affiliated with large research organizations like the CNRS, INRA and INSERM. All the institutions in the Lille University 1 provide research projects in Micro-Electronics, Automated Earth Transport, Mechanics and Automated Machines, New Materials, Structural/Functional Bio-Molecular Relations, Economy of Industrial Firms, Education and Engineering.
The international students are provided with housing facilities, programs in French as a foreign language which help them to follow the medium of instruction.
The degrees that are offered are:
- Licence
- Masters
- Doctorate The degrees are coordinated in the form of modules and some of the modules are obligatory while the rest of them are optional.
Accommodation: The CROUS in Lille has rooms available for 9000 students in 34 halls of residence. Taking into consideration the large number of students in Lille (over 75,000), rooms in the halls of residence are allocated according to social criteria. As Lille is a major university town, there are many rooms and flats for students to rent from private landlords/landladies.
Library: The University Lille 1 university library is the central building on the campus. Its documentary base comprises 160,000 books, 60,000 theses and 660 subscriptions to various scientific journals.
Lille I university encourages students to do a sport, as well as promoting competition. It has at its disposal large sports centre, and proposes a wide variety of activities. There are 60 clubs and student societies on the campus.
