The Universite de Franche-Comte was established in Dole during the epoch of Joan of Arc in 1423 by Duke Philippe the Good. The total get-up and appearance of the University has changed much from the dimly lit structure of the medieval ages to an enormous, elegant and modern looking building of the 21st century.

Scholarships
Students may avail of grants offered by the French Government. French Universities generally do not provide scholarships to students. However, students of the University may avail of the following allowances that are valued at 229 € each.

Facilities
The Library stocks a vast quantity of books and electronic resources. The famous Blackwell Online Reference is present in the Library. The European pharmacopeia – a pharmaceutical treatise on the manufacture of homoeopathic and allopathic drugs can be viewed online in the Library. The reference guide, Scopus, is available too. This guide is a compendium of scientific, technical and medical terms and texts.
The University encourages its students to participate in a number of recreational and sports activities such as aikido, dancing, tennis skiing, etc.
The University provides accommodation to its students in the University's House of Students.
