The Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1 was established in December 1970 and today is one of the best Universities of France. It is an educational institute which attracts almost 28,000 students from different parts of the world.
Education in this University is divided into two sectors – Science and technology and Health Sciences. The Science and Technology sector is located in the La DOUA campus and consists of teaching and research units.
The campus also houses an Engineering School and two Technological Institutes.

The University displays great potentiality in the sphere of research, and has one hundred and two labellized units of research, forty-one of which are in partnership with C.N.R.S, 22 with I.N.S.E.R.M. The university has adopted the European Charter of Researcher on 13th November 2006
The University has intimate operational links with ENS of Lyon and three Engineering Schools – INSA, Centrale and CPE.
The University undertook “Mission Handicapped” from 1994 onwards under which it aims to open educational opportunities for the handicapped students.
