The Université Bordeaux 1 Sciences et Technologie was founded in 1968. It is an important French institution of higher education due to the nationally and internationally recognized quality of studies and for the research organizations it accommodates.
The University specializes in five broad disciplines:
Mathematics and computer science
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
The Earth and Marine Sciences
Several University Institutes of Technology (IUTs) and two internal engineering schools are affiliated to the university:
The Institut des Sciences et Techniques d'Alimentation de Bordeaux (ISTAB)
The Ecole d'ingénieurs en modélisation mécanique et mathématiqu (MATMECA)
The research activity (in 47 laboratories) is notable for its vigorous interaction with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).
Specialized service centers support educational programs within the university. They include:
Espace Alpha (dedicated to experimentation in the new information and communication technologies)
Espace Oméga (dedicated to language education)
A Center for Career Information.
During the first 4 years of the university course, the students can obtain purses of higher education on social criteria (allotted according to the resources and parental loads).
The assuming students only can ask for an allowance of study (fixed quotas and allotted by an academic commission). The French students can get loans based on certain terms and conditions.
