The Artois University is one of five Catholic universities in France and is located at Angers. Artois University is both the youngest and the oldest university in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
King Philippe II of Spain created a university in the city of Douai. It was to be transferred to Lille at the end of the 19th century. In 1992, Artois University was then created from the three subsidiaries of Lille University. It is a multipolar and multi-disciplinary university comprising of the faculties of letters, of sciences, and law, and a superior school of agriculture, with a teaching staff of 45 professors and from 200 to 300 students, most of whom are laymen belonging to the faculty of law.
The various disciplines of the university are as follows:
- The Faculty of Letters and Arts
- The Faculty of Foreign Languages
- The Faculty of Economic and Social Administration
- The Faculty of History and Geography
- IUP (vocational university institute) of Heritage and Tourism
- The Faculty of Economics
- The Faculty of Applied Sciences
- The University Institute of Technology
- The Faculty of Sciences
Even though Artois University was created recently, in only few years it has established links with a vast network of schools working jointly for exchange students within Europe, the United States, Canada and China.
The “CAF” (Caisse d'Allocations Familiales), helps the students to be entitled to receive a financial assistance to pay their rent.
Each pole (Arras, Béthune, Lens, Liévin, Douai) of Artois University is endowed with a university library. In the libraries the students will find documents and books they can consult and borrow. Each library is equipped with computers.
The Artois University provides accommodation facilities for the students like private flats, council flats, hostels (for both boys and girls) and mixed residence.
