It was founded in the middle ages.It was created in its present form in 1971.The University has 17000 students and 2000 trainees.
There are7 Units of Formation and Research (UFR):
- Letters, Languages and Social sciences
- Right, Economy and Management
- Sciences
- Medical sciences
- Pharmaceutical sciences and Engineering of Health
- ISTIA (Institute of Sciences and Technology for the Engineer of Angers)
- IMIS-ESTHUA (Institute of Real Maintenance and Safety - Higher Studies of Tourism and Hotel

The University Library
The site of the B.U presents all the documentary resources of the library.
It offers to the students a starting point for their research, as well as the access to the numerical resources on line, reserved to the members of the University of Angers.
The Library includes/understands three sites established near various faculties:
- Beautiful-Beille library (Sciences and Letters)
- Library Saint-Serge (Right, Economy, Sciences Social and Policies)
- Library Monteclair (Medicine and Pharmacy)
