The INALCO (known also under the name of Languages O'), can be called the direct descendant of the School of the Young people of Languages formerly founded by Colbert then School of the Alive Eastern Languages and recreated by the Convention of 1795. On the whole, approximately 90 languages and civilizations are taught and some of them are part time courses.
The national Institute of the languages and Eastern civilizations (INALCO) is a great establishment in scientific, cultural and professional matters and works under the supervision of the Ministry for youth, National Education and Research.
The Institut vows to teach the languages of the Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and the aboriginals of America, as well as the geography, history, the institutions, the political, economic and social life of the countries concerned.

Diplomas:
The INALCO accommodates the first year or initial students, in 1st year, for all the taught languages.
The first prepared diploma (1st university cycle) is called DULCO (Unilingual Diploma of Language and Eastern Civilization). It is equivalent to the DEUG of the universities.
Library:
The Media Library or the Publications Languages O is rich with books, multimedia services, and research works of the former students that are published, journals, and other databases. Created with the School of the Eastern Languages, under Convention in 1795, year III of the Republic, the Library has catered to the needs of the students since 1873. Today the Library of the Eastern Languages is an inter-University establishment (BIULO), which from the start indicates its national role for the studies and research. Its collections cover vast fields which are not only informative but unique and rare and cover vast fields like linguistics, literature and civilization concerning the Middle East, Asia in its totality, Africa, Oceania, the Central and Eastern Europe, the Slavic world. Seventy languages share the whole of 550.000 volumes and the 9.600 titles of periodicals. Some like the Urdu one are not present anywhere else in France. Doctoral School:
The doctoral School has the role of animating the scientific life of the INALCO, according to orientations' of the scientific policy of the establishment and ensures recruitment of the students who want to be a part of the Doctorate Faculty.
