Linus Torvalds

Linus Benedict Torvalds is a prominent Finnish software engineer who became popular for his initiatives in the field of Linux kernel. Linus Torvalds was born in December 28, 1969 in Helsinki in the country of Finland. Presently Linus Torvalds is one of the top IT people and is designated with the position of project's coordinator.

Linus Torvalds was highly inspired and was stimulated by the Minix operating system which was designed by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. Minix operating system was developed so that it could run on all personal computers.

Torvalds has made his impression on "Linux" with his trademark made through the non-profit organization of Linux International. Almost 2% of the Linux kernel is written and designed by Linus Torvalds.

Linus Torvalds has the main authority on whatever new code is integrated within the Linux kernel. Before, Linus Torvalds wanted to name Linux kernel as Freax. But his friend Ari Lemmke, who managed the FTP server, gave Torvalds a directory named as Linux, where Linux kernel was first hosted.



Linus was the son of journalists Anna and Nils Torvalds. The grandson of Linus was a poet named Ole Torvalds. Linus Torvalds are Swedish-speaking minority belonging to the Finland group of society. Linus Torvalds graduated from the University of Helsinki from 1988 to 1996 with a master's degree in computer science. Linus Torvalds M.Sc. thesis was even titled Linux: A Portable Operating System.

Linus Torvalds showed his curiosity in computers with his initiative in Commodore VIC-20. During 1990 Linus Torvalds acquired Intel 80386-based IBM PC before he got his Minix copy which initiated his work on Linux.
