James Gosling , the famous software developer is the creator of the Java programming language and best known as the “father of Java”. He is considered to be one among the top IT people in the world.
Gosling was born on May 15, 1955 in Canada. In the year 1977 James Gosling completed his graduation from the University of Calgary in Computer Science. The Carnegie Mellon University offered him a PhD in Computer Science in 1983. He named his doctoral thesis “The Algebraic Manipulation of Constraints”. During his doctoral research he wrote a version of ‘emacs' that is also known as “gosmacs”. While he was still at the Carnegie Mellon University, James Gosling built a multi-processor version of UNIX. He also invented several mail systems and compliers. In 1984 James Gosling joined Sun Microsystems and still continues to be a member of the Sun Microsystems family.
Java programming language was initiated in the year 1994. The original design of Java was done by James Gosling. The original compiler and virtual machine of Java was also implemented by him. Gosling was accompanied by Patrick Naughton and Mike Sheridan. Java was initially named “Oak”. It was actually developed as a part of the Green project. Gosling was elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering for this outstanding achievement.

James Gosling had also made several contributions to other software systems like gosmacs and NeWS. Canada's highest civilian honor, Order of Canada was awarded to James Gosling in 2007, making him an Officer.
