Programming Languages

Programming languages are used to create computer software. They are kind of artificially developed languages designed to run the devices associated with computer systems. Syntactic and semantic rules are the two basic rules used in programming languages. All computer software related organizations and manipulations are tackled by programming language. At present there are several thousands of programming languages that attempt to make the computing operations easier than before.

Functions of Programming Languages

Programming language is the medium through which commands are transferred to computer memory. Programming languages are much more compact and precise than human languages. Because computer systems operate on the basis of commands; if the programming languages fail to convert them into task specific format, computer software won’t be able to perform the task.

Types of Programming Languages

Some of the most commonly used programming languages are listed below:

  • Non-English-Based Programming Languages
  • Assembly Languages
  • High Level Languages
  • Scripting Languages

Syntax is the surface form used in all types of programming languages. The structural format of programming languages is more or less same for all types. Words, punctuations and numbers arranged in textual format form the basis of programming language.

The Algol language introduced in the following year was a major breakthrough in the history of programming. Algol has contributed substantially in the development of modern programming languages like Java, C, C++ and Pascal. The programming language Pascal, presents a unique combination of FORTRAN, ALGOL, COBOL and some other commonly used languages.
