Modems are used for sending digital data from the computers through a phone line. The word modem is formed by contraction of the 2 words modulator and demodulator. It is a type of computer hardware .
Modems are devices that help in the modulation of a carrier signal in the form of analog, and encode the digital information. They also take part in the demodulation of the same carrier signal in order to decode the information that had been transmitted. Modems have the final aim of producing a signal which could be transmitted effortlessly and decoded for reproducing the original or first digital data. They can be used through different types of transmitting analog signals. Wireless modems function by transforming digital data into something like radio signals and vice versa.
Smart Modem:
This was developed by Hayes Communications in 1981. It was a 103A 300-bit/s modem which remained connected to a little controller which allowed the computer to send out commands and also control the phone line.
Introduction of Modems:
Modems became known to people from the 1960's so that computers could be connected through phone lines with the help of terminals. In this sort of an arrangement a “dumb terminal” needs to “dial in” to a central computer. A dumb terminal can be a screen or a keyboard. When a character is typed the modem sends an ASCII code to the computer. Today's modems are extremely popular for connecting fast to the Internet.

Basically there are 2 modems – the sending modem and the receiving modem . The function of the first modem is to modulate data in the signal format which gets attuned with the phone line, while the other modem demodulates the received signal into digital data.
