The full form of SUV is sport utility vehicle. These are mainly passenger cars with exceptional capacity of station wagons or pick up trucks. SUVs are also well suited for cargo transportation. The other terms which are used for SUVs are ‘off-road vehicle’ (4WD) or four-wheel drive (4x4)’. The exceptional characteristic of SUVs is that the car can get to even off-road destinations. SUVs with minute alteration are also known to take part in rallies and races.
The cars generally have three rows of seats behind which the cargo compartment is located. There is no separate trunk as such. The engines of SUV are of high capacity. The load and tow capacity is also comparatively high. The interior of these cars are spacious. The body configuration and the seating arrangements are fabricated keeping in mind that these vehicles will be mostly used for long travels.
Of late the manufacturers of SUVs were facing certain demands from the customers for more cars –like features instead of characteristics of a truck. The environmentalists were also against the SUVs because these are oversized cars and leads to wastage of fuel. Thus as a solution to this problem a new class of cars called crossover SUVs came into the market.
The look of crossover SUVs are no different form the original SUVs but it has improved fuel efficiency and is also lighter in weight. The cost of the crossover SUVs or CUVs as it is commonly known is much less than the SUVs. The crossover SUVs comes in different in sizes and shapes depending on the manufacturer. There are mini Crossover SUVs, small Crossover SUVs, medium Crossover SUVs and large Crossover SUVs.
