Introduction The Nissan Frontier is a medium pickup truck assembled by Nissan and sold under the brand name Nissan. Nissan was the pioneer of the compact pickup trucks in 1959. Since 1959, Nissan is a name to reckon with in the compact pickup truck market. Nissan were the first to introduce extended cab bodystyle (in the 1976 Nissan King Cab) and the first crew cab bodystyle compact pickup in North America, in the 2000 Frontier. The Frontier is called Navara when sold in Europe. Manufacturer The pickup trucks are manufactured by the Nissan brand. Nissan Frontiers are currently built in Smyrna, Tennessee. History The Nissan Frontier was introduced in 1997 for the 1998 model year. It served as a replacement for the aging 1986.5–1997 Nissan Hardbody Truck. The Frontier initially had a 4-cylinder engine, the KA24DE, but the 6-cylinder engine, the VG33E was added in 1999. Originally the truck was available in a standard cab, but a king cab configuration was added in 1999. The 2000 Frontier Crew Cab was the first compact pickup to offer a 4-door body-style in North America. In 2001 it was given a new look.
