The retail brand J . C. Penney Company was established in 1902. The founders of this grand retail company were James Cash Penney and William Henry McManus. The first store of this J . C. Penney Company was an ordinary store and the business was of dry goods. This store was named The Golden Rule. However, when J.C. Penney acquired a certain portion of this store in the year 1913, the names of the store was changed into J.C. Penney.
Although the company was a partner of J.C. Penney at the time, J.C. Penney Company acquired a certain portion of the retail chain named William McManus.
The headquarters of J.C. Penney was transferred to Salt Lake City in Utah in 1909. It was done because the location was much closer to the banks and also the railways. In the year of 1914, the headquarters was again relocated to Buffalo because from this place the transportation of the good became easy.
