Costco Wholesale Corporation, or Costco Wholesale, as it is better known, is a globally renowned name in the business of retail. Famous worldwide, Costco Wholesale ranks as the biggest public membership warehouse club chain in the entire world.
The headquarters of Costco Wholesale is located in the US city of Issaquah, in Washington, with its main flagship nearby in Seattle. Like in the US, Costco Wholesale has several divisions all over Canada too. Some of the Canadian bases of Costco are in Ottawa, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
This world wide retail network was started up by James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman in the year 1983 on the 15 th of September. They began by setting up the first flagship warehouse in Seattle in Washington. A wholesale dealer, they catered to the local supply requirements of small-time businesses. In 1993, Costco merged with another similar company called Price Club to become “PriceCostco”. PriceCostco was initially run by executives from both the merged companies. However, in 1994, the owner of Price Club left to start off anew, leaving the company in charge of the Costco management. So in the same year after the departure, the company went back to being called the Costco Wholesale.
Today, Costco rakes in the largest amount of sales revenues and records the largest sales volumes in the United States, though its closest rival in the membership warehouse, Sam's Club, has the higher number of warehouses. Costco warehouses also employ some 127,000 employees in all.
