Bestseller Non-fiction Classics
Bestseller Non-fiction Classics have always been favorites amongst the readers for they give us the fortitude to sail through the trails and tribulations that life presents. Classics constitute books of the erstwhile ages that span several centuries from the days when Greek and Roman statesmanship reached their golden years; to the heady periods under Charlemagne during the European Renaissance; and the epochs during the pinnacle of the Elizabethan age, the rise of the bourgeoisie after the French revolution, and during the advent of democracy and good governance, the world over at the end of the Victorian regime. Many of these books were prolix fictions depicting the social and political values of the times. Some immensely popular non-fictions were also penned, especially after the Victorian era, during the latter half of the 19 th century and post war years of the 20 th century. These books told the stories of real-people, real crises and real situations and were extremely well written. They are categorized as Classics not only because of their popularity but also because of their classy writing. There is no scope for any vicarious pleasure for the writer or the readers of such books. The names of some of these bestseller non-fiction classics are:
Anne Frank : The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank: In this book, the teenage Anne Frank has narrated brilliantly her experience while she and her family were in hiding from the Nazis because they were Jews. A piece of literature that has no comparison and more so because it has been authored by a thirteen-year old, the writing of the book is extremely poignant and highlights the repercussions of the brutal atrocities of the Nazis during the Second World War.
The Story of My Life by Helen Keller : Helen Keller was an American who was born in Alabama. She was born, a normal child but contracted a horrifying illness at an early age, which destroyed her eyesight and her power of hearing forever. As she lost her sense of hearing at such a tender age, she automatically lost her sense of speech. The Story of My Life relates her story of a stupendous struggle against unimaginable odds of blindness, deafness and muteness. A key protagonist of the book is her teacher, friend, philosopher, and guide, Ms. Anne Sullivan, a remarkable lady, herself partially blind, who takes out the young Helen from her perpetual morass and compels her to come to terms with her disabilities and overcome the same to an admirable degree. An inspiring book, The Story of My Life exhorts its readers to understand that there is nothing impossible in life and all ghastly obstacles can be conquered by sheer force of the will.
My Experiments with Truth by M.K. Gandhi : In this world-renowned autobiography, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi records incidents of his childhood, youth, and middle ages in a most truthful manner. The most mundane facts of his life are interwoven with his experiences in South Africa where he stood up with much valor against racism and his crucial role in India's struggle for freedom It is of great interest to note how Gandhi portrays the most significant philosophies of righteousness through some of his most commonplace experiences. Gandhi's thoughts on non-violence and ahimsa form the quintessential pages of the book.
