CLASSIC FEMINIST FICTION BOOKS

Classic Feminist fiction books have started appealing to more than just feminists in recent times. Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, George Eliot, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Virginia Woolf , were some of the famous writers of Classic Feminist Fiction Books . They were the pioneers in propagating feminism and spreading the awareness of women's rights through their deft skills in fiction writing. Jane Austen , for instance, has become a house-hold name because of the charming quality of her novels such as Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility . All these novels deal with the domestic lives of 19 th century women. Austen is often criticized for depicting docile female protagonists. But a close reading of Pride and Prejudice will prove that Jane in her own times was addressing the matter of a woman's preference in marriage and her rights to determine the course of her life. Thus you have Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist, judging her man, Darcy, before accepting his proposal of marriage. Instead of being a mute and passive doll, Elizabeth wins your heart with her wit and intelligence.

The Bronte Sisters , Charlotte and Emily , handled the issue of feminism in their own distinct styles. Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights (1847) is a timeless classic feminist fiction book . She presents a strong female protagonist and pits her against an even stronger male hero. The passion of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff will continue to haunt readers of all ages. As a 19 th century English novel, Wuthering Heights was quite bold in depicting male-female bonding in such strong terms. Female passion comes across very poignantly in this classic feminist fiction book .

Charlotte Bronte wrote some eternal classic feminist fiction book. Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley, (1849), Villette (1853) are unparallel in their depiction of feminist issues. Jane Eyre has two female protagonists, the orphan but spirited Jane and the mad woman Bertha. Critics often see the two women as alter-egos of the same person. The madness of Bertha can be interpreted as the feelings of suppression that women suffer in a male dominated society.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a 19 th century American writer, also deals with women psychology in her works. The classic feminist fiction book, The Yellow Wall Paper , shows how subjugation and domination can break the spirit of a woman and turn her mad. Women writers were discouraged by their male counterparts for fear of competition. When the creative skill and talent of women is repressed by men the result can be devastating as shown in several classic feminist fiction books.
