School libraries as it appears from the name itself are great centers of learning for students of all grades. School libraries are knowledge centers for not only the students but also the faculty, staff and parents of any kind of school. Library media center is a name given to school libraries. School libraries are no exceptions as they are also stocked up with books, periodicals, journals, films, recorded sounds and other media like other libraries. These provide entertainment besides knowledge.
The school libraries are so equipped that they instruct the students on library and research skills as they are an extension of the school curriculum.
The teachers play the role of librarians as well and in the elementary level, they assist the students in selecting books and school work. At the secondary level, the teacher-librarians assist the students with research. The librarians help the students to learn to access, read and evaluate information as these are the basic skills required. It is interesting to know that in this age of technology, the students are willing to avail of the school libraries despite the presence of the Internet, which in turn helps them to be effective consumers of all sorts of information available.
The Internet is a vast domain where people can have access to various materials but barring some major sites, there are some sites where the material is neither updated nor correct. So it becomes necessary for the students to go through the required subject from the book as they are reliable and not biased. The school libraries are essential tools that teach the students the ways of successful living and learning.
