Volaris was founded in 2005 and started its flight service in 2006. The business partners to be involved in purchasing the business rights of Volaris include Grupo TACA, Grupo Televisa, Inbursa and Protego Discovery Fund. Each of these partners had made an investment of $100 million USD. Volaris has its hubs in Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport, General Abelardo L. Rodríguez International Airport. General Abelardo L. Rodríguez International Airport (Tijuana International Airport) is the largest base of Volaris Airlines.
In November 2008, Volaris announced a code share agreement with US-based low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines. Volaris has received permission to fly between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Mexico City, along with a number of other U.S.-Mexico routes and received approval to fly to San Diego International Airport on July 12, 2011.
