Sri Lanka airlines was formerly known as Air Lanka. In 1998 the airlines entered into a 10 year strategic partnership with Emirates which has a stake of 43.6% in the company.
The government retained majority of the stake in the airlines but gave full control to emirates for investment & management decisions. Thus from 1998 onwards Air Lanka came to be known as Sri Lanka Airlines.
