Al Zubarah is situated at around 110kms west of Doha. It is in the town of Al Zubarah. In the Al Zubarah city, there is a fort in the same name. Al Zubarah fort was built in time of 1938. This has been converted into a museum. It is square shaped having circular towers in three corners, and a rectangular tower is positioned in the fourth. The huge walls of the fort are thick. It was used by the military personnel after middle of 1980. Before that, this fort had been used to serve as a coast-guard station.
It was 1987 when the fort was under restoration in 1987. People can view this Al Zubarah fort in all weekdays. Friday morning and Saturdays are closed for public. No cost is charged as of tickets. Al Zubarah has been a popular attraction in Qatar for tourists as this city holds a significant archaeological site. The fort of Al Zubarah, built under supervision of Qatari Sheikh 'Abdu'llah bin Qasim Al-Thani, brings back remembrances of French Foreign Legion.
The place is isolated, however a great historical spot to realize. History and cultural heritage of the region is empowered to great extent by the Al Zubara fort. Exhibition of local artifacts and many historical items are there.
