Qatar has a sporting tradition throughout its history. Qatar soccer is noted for its excellent football players who are regarded as one of the finest sports persons anywhere in the world.
Qatar soccer had humble beginnings. The first recorded Qatar football club was set up at Dukhan in 1948. The first Doha football club was established in 1950. The name of the first football club was 'Al Ahli'. The Qatar Football Association was established in 1960. The association was registered with FIFA in 1970. The present soccer scene in Qatar consists of a number of leagues. Each league is composed of 10 football teams. The football teams are divided into First Division teams and Second Division teams on the basis of their sporting performance.
There are 20 Qatar football clubs playing in the country. 10 football clubs play in the upper league. The remaining 10 Qatar soccer clubs play in the lower league. The upper league is also known as Q league. Every club in the Q league plays a total of 18 football matches. The First Division football clubs include notable clubs like Al-Saad, Al-Arabi Sports Club, Al-Gharrafa, Al-Shamal, Al-Khor, Umm Salal Sports Club and Qatar Sports Club among others.
