Qatar T.V. came into existence in the year of 1970.
Qatar T.V was introduced after the invention of radio in Qatar. Qatar T.V at that time however could broadcast only one channel. The first Qatar T.V. had black and white programming, which could be enjoyed only for three to four hours in a day. Color T.V. was first viewed in 1974. The second channel was in English, which came into existence in 1982 and the Qatar television came on air in the month of December in 1998. In spite of the government financing the Al Jazeera T.V. Channel, it was considered as a private one.
Qatar saw its first wireless cable television system in 1993 by the name of Qatar Cablevision or QCV. Out of the thirty-one channels offered by QTV, the most popular were
BBC, CNN, Arab Satellite Channels and Fox Sports. There is the newly developed government telecommunications service named Qatar Public Telecommunications Corporation or Q-Tel which owns the entire IT infrastructure of Qatar. Q-Tel has also come forward with its internet services in 1996 in the month of May. There is a division in the users of this networking system into the personal and the private sectors. To defend itself from the network hackers, Q-Tel uses its routers as firewalls and protectors against the undesirable sites.
The leading and the most popular Television channel in Qatar is
Al Jazeera. It is the sole
Arabic channel in the Middle East which provides 24 hour long news coverage. It is also the only news channel on the Television in Qatar which has a reporter inside the Taliban regime which once used to control the whole of Afghanistan.
