Portugal schools dates back even before the independence of the country in the 12th century. At that time there were several cathedral, monastic and parish schools where students were given the basic education. The education system at all the schools in Portugal can be classified into the following categories:
- Basic Education
The basic education in these schools continues for 8 consecutive years. It is divided into three stages. The first stage lasts for 4 years and the second and third stage for 2 years. After completion of the course a Diploma/ Certificate is awarded to each student.
- Secondary Education
Secondary education has two types of course:
- General Course
- Technical / Vocational Course
Students who have successfully completed the basic education is eligible for this 3 years course.
