Peru is a country in the western regions of South America, and a wonderful destination for tourists. Widely known as the seat of the prestigious Inca civilization, it has varying terrain, ranging from arid coastal areas and the Atacama desert, the high Andes mountains, and extensive grasslands and rain forests. For those whose passion is to trek, Peru is a great destination, presenting many opportunities, and having many great trekking trails.
The most adventurous trek routes in Peru are centered around the Andes mountain range, especially the Cordillera Blanca region. This is one of the most picturesque parts of the Andes, and there are many trek routes that catch the fancy of those waiting for adventure. Most of these treks are difficult, taking trekkers to high altitudes, and not recommended for beginners.
A famous trail in the Cordillera Blanca is the Santa Cruz trek. This is a moderately difficult trek that takes trekkers on a 45 kilometer long trek through some of the most scenic locations the Cordillera can provide, including peaks, picturesque lakes and meadows. Another trek is the 85 kilometer toil to the Alpamayo Base Camp, which takes one to extreme altitudes and some great scenery.
Extremely popular treks in Peru are the Inca trails, most starting from the fabled city Cuzco. These take trekkers to various Inca monuments near Cuzco, the most popular of them being Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. There are various tour operators and travel agencies which organize treks, and employ expert guides to accompany trekkers on these routes.
