Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham rediscovered the ruins of Machu Picchu Peru in 1911. It is one of the most surprising and enigmatic site of this earth. It was regarded as a sacred place by the Incas from a very ancient period. It has been turned to an extraordinary city by the Incas. It was secret ceremonial city of the Incas.
Machu Picchu Peru was made to be self-contained city which was invisible from below and was surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the people and it was watered by natural springs. The ruins include palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms and houses. These are the examples of architectural and aesthetic genius. The structures are made out of gray granite of the mountain top.
Astronomical observatory is one of the main functions of Machu Picchu of Peru. The equinoxes and celestial periods were indicated by the Intihuatana. Intihuatana stones were sacred objects to these people which provide a vision of the world of spirit to a sensitive person. These were destroyed by the Spaniards later on. The Spaniards never found Inca citadel in Machu Picchu but they occupied Cuzco and the great empire came to an end.
The northern side of Machu Picchu, Wayna Picchu is the “Temple of the Moon” inside a cavern. Machu Picchu in Peru is often being referred as “The Lost City of the Incas”. After the National Geographic Society devoted their entire April issue to this historical place in 1913 Machu Picchu receive significant publicity.
