The Peru prime minister is a part of the legislative body of the Peru government. He belongs to the council of ministers and is elected through voting by universal suffrage. Unlike the president the power of the prime minister is limited. All the ministers of the council resign if the prime minister resigns.
The prime minister in Peru used to serve as the economics minister as well. After the resignation of prime minister Juan Carlos Hurtado Miller the posts of the prime minister and the economics minister were separated by the president, Fujimori. But he combined the posts of prime minister and the minister of foreign affairs. The power of Peru prime mister without some other ministry in his hands would be too restricted especially in a country dominated by the President.
The constitution of Peru was changed in 1993 when a new constitution that was formed provided the prime minister with a little more power than before. In 2003 President Alejandro Toledo appointed the first women prime minister of Peru Beatriz Merino. She was the head of the tax department, belonged to the congress and was associated with conservative parties. The naming of a woman as the prime minister of Peru for the first time in the history created waves of sensation in Peru's political world and also in the country as a whole.
Currently Jorge del Castillo is actting as the prime minister. Some famous prime ministers of Peru were Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Luis Solari de la Fuente, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Federico Salas etc. As Peru has a presidential form of government the role of prime minister is limited and he is not powerful as the president. Still the Peru prime minister owns a significant place in Peru political system.
