The main voting counting body of Peru Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales (ONPE) is responsible for the counting of votes during the election processes in Peru.
The credibility of elections and voting lies on ONPE Peru and the ONPE officials are responsible for the final results of the elections.

After the votes are sent from the polling booths to ONPE it is their duty to count the votes and present the final result of the elections. Thus the ONPE Peru is responsible for any showdown in the election results. The ONPE of Peru has therefore a pivotal role to play in the democratic system of Peru government as without ONPE the election process would remain incomplete.

ONPE in Peru has an important and crucial place in the electoral set up of Peru. The ONPE presidential results present a comprehensive picture of the election results showing the total percentage of votes received by the presidential candidates, the percentage of votes received by the candidates from different parts of the country and a graphical representation of the whole data received. The ONPE of Peru also gives the hourly results of the elections. This makes counting easier and more convenient and the whole electoral process a smooth one.

Thus ONPE is responsible for tally of votes and the results of elections. But ONPE Peru lost its credibility to some extent during the presidential elections of 1992 which brought President Fijimori into power. ONPE got involved in the forgery scandal which led to the loss of its credibility.
