Paraguay Independence



Paraguay Independence came in 14th May, 1811 when the country freed itself from the shackles of the rules of the Spanish. Paraguay Independence is celebrated on 14th May every year with great pomp and splendor.

The first Spanish colony was established by Domingo Martinez de Irala and Juan de Salazar in in1536-1556. The Spanish colonizers settled in Guarani in the region of Asuncion which is the present capital of Paraguay. Irala then established the centre of Spanish power in Paraguay. The 17th century, the Jesuits missionary came and established about 30 reducciones comprising of 150,000 Indians. They were engaged in different activities like agricultural production. They established a state within a state and were subject to the envy of the Spanish land owners. The group was overthrown in 1767.The vice Royalty of Rio De Plata made Paraguay dependent on Buenos Aires.

In Paraguay struggle for independence, Paraguay had to first combat the forces of Argentina. Paraguay rejected the leadership of Buenos Aires. The military of Paraguay combated the Argentina fought against Manuel Belgrano in 1811.In 1811, under the leadership of Paraguay military captains Pedro Juan Cabellero and Fulgencio Yegros the Paraguay military overthrew the colonial power and declared the independence of Paraguay in the year of 1811.
