The two major natural
Paraguay Regions are the Chaco region which is a huge prime plain and the Paranena region which is a combination of undulating hills, plateaus and valleys. About 90 percent of the population of Paraguay inhabit in the Paranena region which is one of the
Paraguay Regions.
The Paranena region, which is inclusive of the region of Paraguay, is having all the noteworthy geographical features and the type of weather is much more conventional. The Chaco region is chiefly plain area and also it has proclivity towards Rio Paraguay that is alternatively dry and flooded.
The drainage of the Paranena region is derived mainly from the rivers that flow westward to Rio Paraguay. There are five physiographic sub-regions at the Paranena region. The five physiographic sub regions are as follows:
- The Northern Upland
- The Parana Plateau
- The Central Lowland
- The Central Hill Belt
- The Neembucu Plain
The Chaco region inclusive of the regions in Paraguay comprises of vast plain with the elevations reaching maximum upto 300 meters and averaging 125 meters. The Chaco plain covers more than 60 percent of the total land area of Paraguay. The Chaco Plain gently slopes towards the east of Rio Paragyuay.
The Gran Chaco is further subdivided into Upper Chaco or the Alto Chaco and the Lower Chaco or the Bajo Chaco. The highest parts in the Gran Chaco are the low hills located at the north western part of the Alto Chaco.
