The Bridge of the Americas in the Panama city has a persuasive distinction of its own. The stylized canopy of the bridge provides a grand contour to the beauty of the city. This 354 feet high and 5,400 feet bridge connects the regions near the Panama city with that of the regions on the other side of the Pacific entrance to the Panama canal. The city was actually bifurcated during the construction of the Panama canal in the year 1914.
The Bridge of the Americas was the result of increasing traffic pressure on the two small service bridges at the Gatun Locks and the Miraflores locks, the latter having been constructed in the year 1942. These two service bridges were the soul connection between the two ends of the Panama city and the North and South America. This called for a separate construction across the Pacific and the Bridge of the Americas was built in the year 1962 with the initiation of the American government. With an investment of US $20 million the bridge not only created an important milestone in American history but has also contributed in enhancing the beauty of the country.
The Bridge of the Americas was an important part of the Pan-American highway until the construction of Centennial Bridge, which was constructed in the year 2004. The history and the grandeur of the bridge make it one of the most important Panama tourist attractions.
