Political Parties of Panama

The Political Parties of Panama operate in a multi-party system. There are several political parties in Panama. A singular political party often does not have the possibility of achieving power alone. Therefore, the Political Parties of Panama more often than not function together to form a coalition government.

Panama Politics

Panama politics is mainly dominated by influential personalities rather than ideological standpoints. A tremendously fractured party structure exist in Panama, which has so far been held together only by the fact that they have all resisted the military regimes.

History of Political Parties of Panama

Traditionally, Panama politics consisted of the Liberals and the Conservatives, who at first disagreed in the question of church and state control. Military interventions in Panama often led to the outlawing of political parties, which has made the party system in Panama so extremely splintered. Currently, the Panama Political Parties tend to form as small groups around local leaders and function in a merger system.

Panama Political Parties

The 1990 coalition government in Panama consisted of President Endara's Arnulfista Party, the National Liberal Republican Movement, and the Christian Democratic Party. Consequently, the Christian Democratic Party broke off from the coalition and became the leader of the opposition because it possessed a larger number of seats in the Legislative Assembly. The Democratic Revolutionary Party returned to power in 1994, as a part of a coalition that also contained the Liberal Republican Party and the Labor Party. This alliance put on an efficient command over the National Assembly and the executive branch.

The Political Parties of Panama at present include strong opposition parties like the National Liberal Republican Movement, the Christian Democratic Party, the Authentic Liberal Party, the Arnulfista Party, the Solidarity Party, and the Liberal Party.
