The Democratic Revolutionary Party, also known as the Partido Revolucionario Democratico or PRD, is one of the major political parties of Panama. It is one of the several political parties of Panama that exist as fractured groups and operate in a coalition system. The Democratic Revolutionary Party is one of the oldest political parties of Panama that had gained power as a part of the coalition government. It stands a very thin chance of gaining power alone, like any other political party in Panama.
Formation of Democratic Revolutionary Party
Omar Torrijos Herrera established the Democratic Revolutionary Party in 1979. The process of formation of the Democratic Revolutionary Party initiated during the canal treaty negotiations with the United States. Torrijos, who was involved in this negotiation, introduced a procedure of an evolution to democracy. The Democratic Revolutionary Party was thus formed, which resulted in the amendment of the 1972 constitution to permit the redeployment of the unicameral legislative body.

The Democratic Revolutionary Party has been strongly associated to the former military regime of Panama. With the death of its founder Torrijos in 1981, a political void developed in the Democratic Revolutionary Party.
