Palestinian Theater has an important and a distinct place in the world of theater. Theater in Palestine happens to come within the educational sphere. From times immemorial theater has made significant ventures in Palestine. However, with the advent of the British rule the Palestine Theater got a setback. Nevertheless, the energetic dramatist did not step back. They kept on writing good plays, which helped in maintaining Palestinian Theater.
This particular enthusiasm of the writers gave rise to the historic and dramatic movement in 1948. This movement was against the extinction of the Palestinian Theater by the English rulers. The movement had its effects in the cities of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Haifa and other cities.
Theater at Palestine got another setback after 1948; during this time Palestine was threatened by Israel. Many Palestinian authors wrote dramas and plays showing the harsh treatments of the Israeli forces over the Palestinians. As a result some of these writers were put behind the bars and few fled away to Jordan to save their lives. Thus theater in Palestine helped the natives to be nationalistic and to act for a common cause.
It was in the year of 1984 that the Palestinian National Theatre came into emergence due to the efforts made by El-Hakawati Theatre Company.
