Palestinian National Authority is engaged in the governance of the parts of West Bank and the Gaza strip. It is also known as the PNA in short and is an interim administrative organization. It came into existence in the year of 1994. The National Authority of Palestine is basically a subsidiary agency of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
There was a time when the National Authority in Palestine used to receive financial aid from the United States and the European Union. But this was stopped from the year of 2006 owing to the victory of Hamas in the parliamentary elections. The Palestinian National Authority built the Gaza International Airport at Rafah. There is a band of officially uniformed armed forces working under it.
As per the 'Basic Law' of Palestine that was signed in 2002 by Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian National Authority is divided into 3 main divisions. They are the executive, legislative and the judiciary. The people elect the President of the National Authority of Palestine directly. The President is also the commander-in chief of the armed forces. The President is now entitled to the appointment of a Prime Minister. The Prime Minister also works as the chief of the national security services.
